LENOVO TO USE ANDROID ON ITS SKYLIGHT SMARTBOOK AND IDEAPAD U1 HYBRID

Lenovo has decided against using its custom-built Skylight OS on its upcoming Skylight smartbook and the IdeaPad U1 Hybrid tablet/laptop. The company has apparently realized that a custom Linux-based operating system with no third party applications will attract few buyers. And since Lenovo is keen on finding as many buyers as possible, it has ditched the Skylight OS in favor of Google Android. Devices running the Android operating system will have access to the tens of thousands of applications in the Android Marketplace.

So ditching Skylight OS is a smart idea, but adopting Android has its downsides too: it will cause the launch dates for both Skylight and the IdeaPad U1 to be pushed back. Both Skylight and IdeaPad U1 have the same 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor.

Meanwhile Lenovo has started calling the IdeaPad U1 Hybrid a 'concept device' which probably doesn't bode well for the future of the device.
