Unlike the standard LCD displays found on most netbooks, the Pixel Qi display can operate in two modes - a full color mode and a high contrast almost black and white mode. In the high-contrast mode the display consumes very little power and it is even readable in direct sunlight. And that is the main advantage. You can't use a typical netbook in sunlight because the display will turn into a mirror due to reflections. And now it looks like there is finally a solution to this vexed problem.
On the downside, the Pixel Qi DIY kit isn't cheap. It costs a whooping $275. Nowadays you can get a complete netbook for that price. But prices will come down as the demand goes up. And hopefully we will soon start seeing actual netbooks and tablets ship with the displays pre-installed.
You can purchase the Pixel Qi display kit from Maker Shed.
