The low power AMD C-50 Fusion APU (Accelerated Processing Unit) is designed for netbooks and ultraportable laptops. It is a dual core processor with a total power draw of 9W. In power efficiency it is comparable to the dual core Atom N550 processor. Better still, this processor comes bundled with the high performance ATI Radeon HD graphics. In other words, the AMD C-50 will get more or less the same battery life as the dual core Atom processor while at the same delivering significantly better graphics performance.
Now AMD has tweaked that processor a bit, making it even more power efficient. The new version of C-50 consumes just 5W of power. It is designed for use in tablets. Because tablets are thinner and lighter than a typical netbook, using components which are extremely power efficient is essential to get a good battery life.
The 5W C-50 is still a 1GHz dual core processor. It just happens to have a simpler memory controller with limited features.
