WORM INFILTRATES MAN'S COMPUTER

You're well aware that you should have anti-virus on your computer. And you're probably aware that if you do not you might get a worm. But what if I told you that no matter how much anti-virus you have, it cannot protect you against a specific type of worm?

That's exactly what Mark Taylor found out after a five inch worm crawled into his notebook and decided to warm itself by the CPU fan. Needless to say the worm was killed the next time Mark's laptop was turned on. But that did not allow the fan to move as he kept getting error messages about this.

So he thought it was just a computer bug and carried it into the repairs. Only to find out later that they had to remove a 5-inch chard earthworm from his computer.

So the moral of the story? If you have a cats don't allow them to bring worms inside your house, as Mark believes that is how the worm got in-by trying to escape the cat that dug it out of the ground.

MACBOOK PRO 17-INCH REVIEW COMING NEXT WEEK

You've hard a lot about the new Macbook Pro 17-inch. So its only proper that we give you a complete review of what we like, don't like and think should be changed.

The review will not only cover specs and performance but also opinions so stay tuned. In case you haven't noticed, they have begun to arrive this week so its OK for you to spend nearly $2700 on a system that does not carry an exchangeable battery.

All we'll say for now is that we really like the system and its solid. But we do have a few reservations. So check back next week for the entire review of the system.

NEW ASUS NETBOOKS COMING IN APRIL

Its quite funny that no company can keep their secrets safe. As secretive as Apple is, you still have individuals bent on leaking everything the company ever has planned. So we're not too surprised to see DigiTimes and Comemrcial Times reporting that Asus will be bringing new netbooks to play in April.

According to the former, Asus will be launching its super-thin Eee PC in April followed by the Eee PC S101. Both systems promise to stay clear of the average netbook and be a lot easier to carry. Prices will start at $486 for the Eee PC and $699 for the S101.

The former netbook will be named the Shell and as the name implies, we're guessing this has more to do with design than performance.

And in case you're wondering, no that is not a picture of the netbook. Neither does using the netbook attract girls like the one you see. We just needed a space filler until the blurry cam does its thing and sends us some pics of the yet to be released system.

DELL MINI 9 DROPS BELOW THE $200 MARK

Don't you love the feeling of extra cash in your pocket? We do! Dell has just dropped the price of their successful Mini 9 to $199. For that price you get a 1.6GHZ Atom CPU, 4-cell battery, WiFi, GMA950 Intel integrated graphics card, 512MB RAM, 4GB SSD and your own personal copy of Ubantu.

If you cannot live without Window's you still have to spend an extra Benjamin to get the XP flavor. But if you have an extra $200 lying around the house, heck why not. You might just like Linux. Other colors than Black is offered but that will require you spending an extra $30. Which is not too much but than again that's coming closer to the price of said netbook being equipped with XP.

VILIV S5 GETS LOOKED AT UNDER VIDEO CAMERA

We're going to be quite short with this as you're probably more interested in watching the actual video. But that Viliv S5 that was posing for the cameras at CES a month ago has been unboxed on video.

The video is narrated in Japanese so unless you speak it, don't stress yourself. But you can go right ahead and view the full experience. In case you forgot exactly what the S5 is, its a Window's powered MID (XP runs under a skin), comes with a 4.8 inch screen (1024 x 600), along with 1GB of RAM, 160GB HDD, Atom processor and a few I/O ports.

Video can be viewed below.

NVIDIA ION TO SUPPORT MORE THAN JUST VIA AND ATOM

Unless you've been living under a rock in geek world you are probably aware that NVIDIA and Intel are at it again in another one of their famous spats. So far neither company has gone to any legal lengths, but there has been a lot of word swapping and not too kind at that either.

But what comes at a bigger surprise is the fact that Ion, the platform that promises to offer better graphic performance on netbooks, will not only support VIA's Atom processor and Intel's Atom processor, but the Intel Core 2 Duo, Celeron and Pentium.

If you're surprised at this, don't be as those of you who know the technological terms for processors will remember that this has its roots in the MCP79M/MCP7A chipset platform.

So we'll just have to see what happens between now and June when Ion is reported to be released, first on nettops and than on netbooks.

VISTA SP2 RELEASE CANDIDATE COMES NEXT WEEK

For those of you who are happily enjoying Window's 7 you're probably not interested in this news. For the rest who didn't get in on the beta, we have good and bad news.

The bad news, Window's 7 isn't coming out any time soon, the good news, Microsoft has decided to keep you in the loop a little longer before Vista will just be a bad memory from the past.

Yesterday MSDN and TechNet subscribers got the release candidate of Vista SP2, as for the rest of us who do not see it fit to spend $500 on such a subscription, the release candidate for us will be available next week.

You should note that this is a release candidate and not the final version. Speculation claims that the final version will be bound for April but you can always try this one and sees if it fixes any of those nasty hardware or driver problems so many of you have been complaining about.

MICROSOFT FIXES 2K BUGS IN WINDOW'S 7

Looks like there was a reason why Microsoft allowed 10 million of us to download Window's 7 beta. According to Steven Sinofsky the company's senior vice president for the Window's Live Engineering Group, the company has already received half a million bug reports from its 10 million plus beta testers.

More importantly is the fact that Steven says the company is considering every single request although they have not replied to everyone who sent them in a bug ticket. According to the post by Steven, Microsoft was receiving a report every fifteen seconds for one week straight.

Yes pretty impressive we might add. Let's hope this translates into a better Window's experience, and not more ammunition for Apple and their sauce....

ASUS EEE PC 904HA QUICK REVIEW

The Asus EEE PC 904HA: A Cut Above The Rest Of The Mini-Notebook Market

Launched in September 2008, the Asus EEE PC 904HA joined the booming market of netbooks right at the time when demand for these mini-notebooks were growing almost exponentially, and competition for gaining leadership in the market was getting tough. And the Asus EEE PC 904HA definitely came into the picture in full force with its impressive specs and impressive price tag. Today, after the launch of many other mini-notebooks from various brands, the Asus EEE PC 904HA remains a popular model and continues to gain good reviews from new buyers. It is ideal as a second netbook or a mobile connectivity device for students and business travelers who are constantly on the go.

To begin with, the Asus EEE PC 904HA has a rather impressive price tag amounting to as low as USD 311.99. What’s more, the 904HA’s low price tag is even more surprising considering its high quality and highly impressive specifications that give it a slight edge in the netbook market. For one thing, its 8.9-inch monitor is just the right size so that the Asus EEE PC 904HA is ultra lightweight and very portable. Furthermore, it also boasts of the Super Hyper Engine, a technology that can only be found in EEE PCs in which your EEE netbook is made so efficient that it’s able to save up to 15% of power. The Asus EEE PC 904HA is so efficient, in fact, that it has a battery life that can last up to six hours.

The Asus EEE PC 904HA also has a built-in web camera for your communication needs, and a storage space of 160GB which makes it convenient to store various forms of multimedia. It runs on Windows XP Home and has Windows Live Messenger also pre-installed.

And while the Asus EEE PC 904HA is light on the pocket, it’s a sight for sore eyes too – with its stylish design, advanced Infushion casing that’s both scratch-resistant and gorgeous, the Asus EEE PC 904HA is a slim, sassy model of a mini-notebook and definitely not just a boring box of a laptop.

Don’t expect the Asus EEE PC 904HA to be a multimedia, all-in-one entertainment powerhouse of a PC – it’s meant to be basic and simple, but that isn’t to say that it can’t be tricked out. The Asus EEE PC 904HA can be easily upgraded as a user wishes, giving it yet another edge against other competitors in the netbook arena.
Overall, the Asus EEE PC 904HA is a definite steal for a price tag of a little over three hundred US dollars, and with all its impressive specs, it’s definitely a stand-out amidst the sea of mini-notebooks that are out in the market today.

Price: Approx. $300

ACER TEASES WITH NEW NETBOOK

Acer still has the number one selling netbook worldwide (the Aspire One), but that doesn't mean they are sitting on their butts and expecting things to go smooth. They are already working on new models which will include touch screen models.

But the model pictured above is quite a step up from the current Aspire One which is just over an inch thick. If you notice the body has been streamlined to the point that the Ethernet port is too big for the main body.

We hear that this will come with SSD only memory which is quite disappointing seeing the tech is so expensive. And no, we have no word on anything else including price or specs. But you can be certain we will keep you posted.

NEW MACBOOK SKINS AVAILABLE

Although we are in love with the new unibody Macbooks, we are a little disappointed that they do not carry a greater number of customization features in terms of style.

Speck has changed that we addition of some new skins that are bound to give your Apple notebook a more personal feel. Colors include, lime green, gray (ironically), purple, red, orange, pink and others.

As usual there are  a few drawbacks such as heat build up and the possibility of your Apple suddenly not being under an inch thin. But if you can live with that than you are welcome to put down $50 for one of these. Sorry though, no 17-inch unibody versions are available now.

SNOW LEAPOARD SCREEN SHOTS LEAK OUT

Apple has done a prety good job of keeping the visual as well as non-visual details of Snow Leapord under wraps. But today we got a few more shots of the new OS and we have to say it looks quite interesting.

One feature allows you to perform nested browsing,Put Back menu which allows you to retrive accidentally trashed items. Other features include a redisigned launce bar and more. We would like to say more on it but Apple is not letting anything else leak.

But if you have time you can check out the gallery at the LINK provided.

DELL STUDIO HD GOES TO SINGAPORE

Remember that new Dell Studio 15 laptop we heard about a few weeks ago? Well, what do you know, it has shown up on Dell's Singapore website along with specs and price. The 1555 has a GPU which boasts 512MB (ATI Mobility Radeon 4570), 15.6 WLED 1366 x 768 screen, 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo CPU, 3GB RAM, 250GB hard drive.

Price is still pretty reasonable, which starts at $1044 (US equivalent). As we said before this one is only for those from the lands of Asia for now so we in the states (and rest of the world) will have to sit tight until Dell sees it fit to send one over.

WINDOW'S 7 TO SUPPORT WWAN

The features of Window's 7 just keep getting better. Latest on the list is the support for WWAN. Now we're not talking about popping a mobile broadband chip in your laptop and getting Internet. We're talking full 100% support. According to Window's Team Blog (Microsoft owned and operated), they have gotten a bunch of companies on board for Mobile Broadband enhancements in Window's 7 with partners including Acer, Asus, Dell, Qualcomm, Sierra Wireless, T-Mobile International, ZTE and others.

This means that you will be able to connect to a wireless broadband network the same way you connect to a wireless network, by using the "View Available Networks" feature.

Might sound pretty simple but we can almost bet you that this means there will be quite a few WWAN providers offering competitive rates to get you on their network.

INTEL POUNDS NVIDIA ABOUT ION

You're well aware that NVIDIA and Intel are not the best of friends. Your probably more aware that Ion from NVIDIA plans to boost graphic performance in nettops and netbooks which include full HD playback.

But what you might not have heard is a recent letter from Intel that has been making its rounds castrating NVIDIA about ther plans to play in Intel's turf.

According to the document, Intel claims that NVIDIA is exaggerating its gaming and multimedia claims concerning Ion and that it might not even be able to do as good as promised. Further more, Intel claims that they will be releasing updated Atom processors this year (hopefully dual-core) which will provide better performance over the current generations and that if NVIDIA plans to ship their Ion platforms their window of oppertunity is small, for success that is.

We're just hoping to see what NVIDIA plans to use to cuss them out. Don't you love geek wars?

FIRST LOOK AT ASUS Eee PC T91 TABLET NETBOOK

The Asus Eee PC T91 Tablet netbook was officially announced at the CES. Though the release date is set somewhere in March the guys at bit-tech.net have managed to get their hands on a pre-production Eee PC T91 sample.

According to bi-tech the most notable feature of Eee PC T91 Tablet is the touch-sensitive display with 1024 x 600 native resolution. This 8.9-inch LED-backlit display can rotate up to 180 degrees on a hinge. Not just the screen, but the hinge also rotates by 180 degrees and Asus claims that the Eee PC T91 is the smallest and the slimmest tablet PC up to date when the display screen is folded back on to the keyboard.

The Eee PC T91 is powered by Intel Atom Z520 processor with Intel US15W chipset, 1GB of DDR2 memory and 32GB SSD. It will also include Bluetooth, WiFi 802.11 b/g, 10/100 Ethernet and an integrated webcam. The Eee PC T91 also has options for GPS connectivity, 3G module and DVB-T TV tuner. This tablet netbook runs on Windows XP Home with Service Pack 3 installed. The Eee PC T91 meaures 225x164x25.2-28.4 mm(W x D x H) and weighs less than 1kg with battery attached. Asus has also announced that it is working on another version of this Tablet called T101 with a 10-inch display.

As concluded by bi-tech, “Ultimately, the quality of Asus’ touch screen software is going to determine the fate of this device because, without great software, you’re paying for a feature that might be useful on occasion, but is likely to be a hindrance more often than not. Having not spent time using the software yet, it's impossible to gauge the fate of the T91 – keyboard and touch pad issues aside though, the device's build quality is a notch above most other Eee PCs and not too far from the S101. And given the amount of time between now and the expected end of April availability date, we expect the issues we encountered to be resolved. If touch is your thing, this might be worth a look.”

PANASONIC ANNOUNCES TOUGHBOOK W8 PREMIUM EDITION

Panasonic has just announced an updated Premium Edition of its W8 Toughbook notebook in Japan. The major difference of this Premium Edition from the original is the introduction of an Intel X-25M 80GB Solid State Drive which offers 250MB/s reading speed and 70MB/s writing speed. The standard edition had a 120GB HDD.

This new addition of SSD makes the Panasonic W8 Toughbook Premium Edition 15 grams lighter and faster than the original edition that came with a HDD. This Premium Edition is encased in a high strength aluminum shell and comes in three colors, black, silver and an eye-popping pink.

The Panasonic W8 Primium Edition is packed with Intel Core 2 Duo SU9300 processor, up to 4GB of RAM and includes Bluetooth and WiFi.

As Panasonic has not given any other information on the specifications of its new Toughbook, we have to assume that it is similar to the standard edition in all other aspects. GATEWAY MD 7820 QUICK REVIEW

The new gateway to designing revolution - The Gateway MD 7820 U

This is one of those laptops in which the manufacturers have paid attention to slightest details from user’s point of view. It is not one of those machines, which may look awesome in the advertisement but disappoints when seen in person physically. There are several options available in terms of colors that the users can choose from. It is considered one of the most functional machines available which serves the unique requirements for its users.

The gateway has a 16.9’ widescreen display which is ideal especially while running the multi media applications like movies, games etc. There is appropriate and even lighting on the entire screen including the edges. The notebook works on the Windows Vista Premium operating system, which is a standard feature and comes in preloaded, although the users might be required to customize some of the settings before actually using for the first time.

The major drawback in the note book is its keyboard. It is the weakling in this other wise pretty standard and user friendly machine. There are touch sensitive buttons available to access the media options on the right side of the keyboard. The touch pad available is very large, almost to the extent of being close to the entire width of the screen. It at times looks a bit awkward especially for people who are not very comfortable with large sized touchpad at it can hinder free movement of the hand while typing.

There are a lot of applications which come preloaded in the system. Users can choose the applications that they wish to use and have the option of removing or uninstalling the not to be used applications. The systems camera software pops up on the screens as soon as the cursor is moved to the edge of the screen. The inbuilt 1.3 mega pixel camera comes in very handy when it comes to taking pictures or video conferencing.

The Gateway has a couple of speakers and a built in mic on the front side, although the sound quality is quite low and not clear. Has a good battery life with considerable time is spent away from the main supply station, thus ensuring peace of mind and functionality especially for people on the go.

It works with an Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T6400 which is quite responsive and fast. Has 320 GB hard drive with 4 GB system memory. Over all it is a physically appealing and better performing notebook with the exception of the disappointing and poor keyboard touchpad layout.

ASUS N10J A1 QUICK REVIEW

Revolution in design - The Asus N10J A1

The N10J A1 in literal terms is called the notebook for the corporate. Apart from offering the standard features present in all the notebooks it packs in additional features like dedicated graphics and a very up market fancy design to go with it. To top it all, the N10 works on Intel Atom platform, making the processing speed much faster and option of navigating through multi windows simultaneously without much of an effort.

The design of the notebook is one notch above the other competitive products available in the market. It is designed keeping in mind the rigors of extensive rough use that it will be undergoing. There are a lot of versions of the N10 which are available in the market. While some versions offer Windows Vista, other offer integrated graphics instead of dedicated graphics, and some might also offer a different hard drive. The only reason why different versions are available is to cater to different needs of the individuals ensuring a better usability and much wider reach in terms of customer base. It has a very thin shape, which propels the battery to stick out from the back of the notebook. It provides color options which are generally not available in other products.

The display screen is a 10.4’ TFT LED backlit WSVGA screen. It offers very bright and vibrant color display with better viewing angles compared to other notebooks. One can spend hours in front of the screens without actually troubling the eyes even a bit. There are a few drawbacks of the display screen though; one is that because of its vibrancy and bright nature, the screen gives out a lot of glare which can be annoying and uncomfortable at times. Secondly the screen resolution is low in comparison to some of the other available products commensurate to the price points it operates in.

It has quite a unique keyboard although the layout design is relatively different from the other notebooks but it is very user friendly and functional to operate. There are separate key available on the keyboard for accessing the dedicated graphics and wireless connectivity options.

The performance of the notebook is somewhat disappointing from the aspect of the frequent multi media users. The system despite having dedicated graphics and the Intel Atom platform at its boot disappoints while high definition multi media files are used. The system also fails to give an outstanding performance when the users try the gaming options. The output in terms of visual effects is just about average, something the users don’t normally like to associate this kind of a machine with.

Price: Approx. $550

TOSHIBA SATELLITE A305-S6908 QUICK REVIEW

A must buy - Toshiba Satellite A305-S6908

The Toshiba Satellite laptop series have been a favorite among professionals and corporations for a long time. Adding to the glory Toshiba Satellite A305-S6908 offers a versatile base for all your needs. It is designed to meet the demands of a multimedia-hungry family, students on the go, and small businesses with demanding computing needs.

The keyboard is ergonomically comfortable. Oh yeah, because the unit is so shiny & polished. Fingerprints are a huge issue. CSI could lift a ton of prints off of this thing. I find my self polishing it now. But again I really like the product, especially for the price point. I am really tickled about the quality of the product for the price point. The speakers are pretty decent but if you really love music you would still use high quality external speakers. The screen is nice & bright. I cannot really talk about video fairly as my laptop has an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3470 video card, not the Intel GMA 4500MHD integrated chip. With 1750 MB total available memory in the integrated chip, I doubt you would see much difference.

Key Features:

 Processor Core 2 Duo 2 GHz
 Installed Memory 4 GB (DDR2 SDRAM)
 Hard Drive 4 GB Serial ATA, 5400 RPM
 Display 15.4 in. WXGA TFT Active Matrix
 Operating System Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium
 Laptop Type Mid-Size Laptop
 Expansion Ports 3 x USB 2.0, 1 x IEEE 1394a (FireWire), VGA out, RJ-11 (modem), RJ-45 (NIC), 1 x eSATA
 Integrated 10/100 Network Card • Integrated Wireless LAN

Pros:

 Beautifully designed; sturdy; no flimsiness of the screen or keyboard; much better speakers than most laptops
 Multitasks with no problem; a very crisp, bright display with no glare.
 The Draft-N Wifi picks up the network anywhere in the house - plus my next door neighbor's network and a house two houses down the street, though at low quality.
 Comfortable Keyboard
 Smooth, high-gloss, sleek surface picks up fingerprints when you just walk by

Cons:

 Bothering up/down (right-side edge) - left/right (bottom edge) scrolling feature of the touch pad. I invariably touch these edges by accident and find my web page or word document has scrolled five pages down and across.
 The biggest complaint is the horrid battery life. One has to plug it up constantly to use it.

Conclusion

The Toshiba Satellite A305-S6908 Laptop Computer features a smooth, shiny palm rest and a recessed touchpad to that gives your notebook both a more streamlined look and more comfort when you’re clicking. Separate multimedia buttons let you launch your favorite entertainment right away as well as control playback–letting you start, pause, fast-forward and rewind almost with feather-touch operation.. A great deal to go ahead with!

1000HE Eee PC FROM ASUS BEGINS SHIPPING

Yes we know this is not terribly exciting but those 1000HE Eee models that Asus demoed at CES have begun to ship. More importantly is the fact that they carry a few cool features for the sub $400 netbook crowd like the updated 1.6GHz N280 CPU, and a 9.5 hour battery.

But as we said before you might want to wait a bit until the tablet editions unveil themselves a few months from now which are bound to bring Window's 7 support as well as multi touch capabilities and according to Asus they will be under $300.

But if you have money fro both, go right on ahead and place your order and the LINK below.

INTEL CLAIMS NO PROBLEMS WITH THEIR SSD

Appearantly Intel was not happy by the findings of PC PERspective's test results yesterday and has no claimed that there is nothing wrong with their SSD's. Further more Intel claims that:

the synthetic workloads they use to stress the drive are not reflective of real world use," . the benchmarks they used to evaluate performance do not represent what a PC user experiences.

We're not 100% sure why Intel is so angry but we would think that it has something to do with the fact that the drives are overpriced and that according to many the technology is still experimental. Either way we're betting that the pandering will go on until Intel finally decides to cave in and release a firm ware update to the drives.

What do you think?

ACER ASPIRE ONE AOA150-1126 QUICK REVIEW

Where technology ties with perfection! - The Acer Aspire One AOA150-1126

Acer was perhaps the first company to present this height of performance in a "laptop".

This small notebook is the actual deal. The Acer does a fine job of playing streaming videos, which is about the greatest speed demand I will ever place on this machine. It is designed particularly for mobile devices, the 1.6 GHz Intel Atom processor exercises an a completely new design structure new hafnium-infused circuitry–which reduces electrical current leakage in transistors–to conserve energy, giving you more time away from the wall outlet–up to 5.5 hours with the included 6-cell battery.

It takes time to be habitual of the keyboard, but fast you can be with a little adaptation, and if your hands aren't too big to make such things impossible. It's physically about 60% the size of the "normal" keyboard on a regular laptop, lacks the number system keys totally but of course has Page Up, Down, Side to Side, full function keys from F1 through F12 for controlling the boot process, initiating a file recovery or System Recovery exercise, whatever...it's all there for that sort of thing, so score more points for Acer One there!
It comes preinstalled with the Microsoft Windows XP Home operating system, which offers more experienced users an improved and original experience that includes Windows Live features like Windows Live Messenger for instant messaging and Windows Live Mail for consolidated email accounts on your desktop.

Pros:

 The battery life from the 6-cell (5200mAh) battery is great.
 The two SD slots are worth using.
 With 1GB of RAM and a surprisingly decent processor, this thing makes a fantastic mobile development environment for a programmer

Cons:

 The touch pad button placing is tragic. But after using regularly one can adapt it.
 Battery life could always be better (8+hrs please).
 The screen's minimum brightness setting is still too bright in a dark room.
 It lacks ‘home’ and 'end' buttons.

Conclusion

Adorable netbook it is! Acer wins in quality of screen, keyboard, touch pad and fit and finish. The Intel Atom Processor combines performance, power and efficiency to explore the Internet and stay connected while on the go.
