INTEL ATOM D2500 AND D2700 CEDAR TRAIL CHIPS LEAKED

It looks like Intel's next-generation low power Atom processors are all ready to launch during the fourth quarter of this year. Details including model numbers and clock speeds of some of the upcoming Cedar Trail platform processors have leaked.

One of these processors - the Atom D2500 - is a dual core processor with a clock speed of 1.86GHz. It has a total power draw of 10 watts and supports DDR3 memory, DirectX 10.1 graphics and Blu-ray video.

The Atom D2700 is a faster processor with a 2.13GHz clock speed and the same 10W TDP. Both chips are based on the 32nm architecture which has the processor and graphics core on the same piece of silicon.

It is not clear whether these processors are aimed at desktops or laptops, but historically Intel chip names beginning with D have been for desktops. Notebook processors usually begin with N or Z.

SPRINT TO OFFER WIFI ONLY MOTOROLA XOOM FOR $600

US wireless carrier Sprint will start offering a WiFi only version of the Motorola Xoom Android tablet starting May 8 for $600. To use the tablet on Sprint's 3G or 4G networks, you will need to get a WiFi hotspot device. Verizon already offers a 3G-enabled version of the same tablet for $799.99.

The WiFi-only Xoom has the same specifications as the 3G-enabled model, but it lacks the 3G modem. The WiFi only model is also available from several other retailers. Interestingly they are all selling the device for $600. That means there is nothing particularly interesting about Sprint's offer.

The Motorola Xoom launched with much fanfare a couple of months ago. Back then it was the only Android 3.0 tablet on the market, but now you are spoilt for choice.
Many of these tablets like the Asus Eee Pad Transformer also carry a relatively cheaper price tag.

LENOVO WORKING ON A 7 INCH TABLET WITH 1280 X 800 PIXELS DISPLAY?

Lenovo is reportedly working on a 7 inch tablet with an HD (1280 x 800 pixels) display. Like other top-of-the-line Android tablets available today this machine too will run Android 3.0 Honeycomb operating system. It will be powered by a dual core ARM-based processor. That means it will have specs similar to those of the Motorola Xoom, Asus Eee Pad Transformer and the Acer Iconia Tab A500. Interestingly while all the models mentioned above have a 10.1 inch HD display, the Lenovo tablet has a 7 inch screen. At least, that is what we have heard.

Android 3.0 looks great on higher resolution displays but most of the third party Android apps are also not designed for tablets with such high resolution displays. It is also not clear how webpages will appear on a tiny display with such a high pixel density.

The source of this information is a leaked product roadmap. Of course, we can't rule out the possibility of this tablet never seeing the light of the day. It is also possible that Lenovo will make some changes to the key specs before bringing it to the market. In any case, it is interesting to see that the 10 inch LePad isn't the only tablet Lenovo is currently working on.

Anyway, at $450, the Iconia Tab A500 is one of the cheapest Android 3.0 tablet available on the market.

The Iconia Tab A500 weighs 1.7 pounds and measures 0.5 inches in thickness.

HP PAVILION G SERIES LAPTOPS NOW AVAILABLE WITH AMD CPUS

The newly launched HP Pavilion g series consumer-class budget notebooks are now available with AMD processors. Previously they were only available with Intel's processors.
The new Pavilion g4-1015dx, g6-la60us and g7-1075dx are all available with AMD's Vision-based dual core processors and Radeon 4250 integrated graphics.

AMD-based notebooks usually tend to be cheaper than their Intel counterparts, but that is not true in this case. The 15.6 inch g6-la60us with AMD Athlon II P360 2.3GHz CPU, 4GB of RAM and a 320GB HDD is now available for purchase from Amazon for $530.94. The same model with a faster Intel Core i3-380M 2.53GHz processor, 4GB of RAM and a larger 500GB hard drive is now available from HP for $549.99.

The AMD models may not get the same battery life as their Intel counterparts, but they will offer significantly better graphics performance thanks to their Radeon 4250 graphics.

CLOSER LOOK AT THE ACER ICONIA TAB W500

The Acer Iconia Tab W500 Windows 7 tablet is now available for purchase. The device has impressive hardware including a 10 inch HD display, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of SSD and a low power AMD processor with decent graphics capabilities.

The Iconia Tab W500 weighs 2.15 pounds. That means it is heavier than the iPad or other similar tablets. However, it is lighter than most 10 inch netbooks.
The Iconia Tab W500 has a keyboard docking station. Adding the keyboard will bring the weight to about 3.65 pounds.

Microsoft's Windows blog has published a detailed overview of the tablet. One aspect that needs a special mention is the fact that when the keyboard is docked you can't close the tablet like you would close a laptop. Instead you will have to remove the tablet from the docking station. But take heart guys, you can do it with just one hand.
The Windows blog also reports that the tablet is snappy. It boots in just 38 seconds and shuts down in 14 seconds. It also resumes from sleep in just 1.5 seconds.

The Iconia Tab W500 has a 1GHz AMD C-50 processor. It may not be all that powerful but it comes bundled with the AMD Radeon HD 6250 graphics which offers impressive graphics performance.

On the flip side, the Iconia Tab W500 gets only around 4.5 hours of battery life. While that isn't all that bad, most Android and iOS tablets offer more uptime. But that is nothing surprising, the AMD C-50 processor consumes much more power than ARM-based processors.

WIFI ONLY DELL STREAK 7 PRICED AT $400

Dell has finally added an official price tag to its WiFi only Streak 7 Android tablet. If you place your order today for $399.99, you should be able to get your tablet in under a week.

Amazon has been taking orders for this tablet since Tuesday. Interestingly Amazon charges about $20 less for the same configuration.

The Dell Streak 7 has a 7 inch capacitive touchscreen display with a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels. It has a 1GHz dual core NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor and 16GB of storage. Sure the tablet offers decent performance, but the truth is that its lower resolution display fails to take advantage of the dual core CPU.

The Dell Streak 7 runs Android 2.2 operating system. It is not clear whether an update to Android 3.0 is anywhere on the cards.

Meanwhile Dell already offers a model with an HSPA+ modem for $199.99 if you sign up for a 2-year service contract with T-Mobile.

FUJITSU LAUNCHES LIFEBOOK P711/C AND S761/C WITH PICO PROJECTORS

In a bid to make them stand out from the rest, Fujitsu is adding a few innovations to its new notebooks. The company's Lifebook P711/C, for instance, is a 12.1 inch notebook with a built-in pico projector.

The projector is in the place where you usually find a disc drive. And when you are not using it, it will hide inside the case. And when you want to use it, just pull it out and point it at a wall or other surface for making presentations or watching movies.

By the way, the Lifebook P711/C has a 1366 x 768 pixels display. The projector, however, has a resolution of just 800 x 600 pixels.

The 13.3 inch Fujitsu Lifebook S761/C also has a built-in projector. There is a third model called LifeBook E741/C with an integrated palm vein sensor. It works much like a fingerprint scanner. This model has a 15.6 inch display. None of these models are likely to come cheap, but I suspect the targeted audience is business users.

ASUS EEE PAD TRANSFORMER REVIEWED

The Asus Eee Pad Transformer is not available for purchase in the US, but it is already on sale in the UK. And now the folks at Engadget have published a very detailed review of the UK version of the tablet.

The Asus Eee Pad Transformer is a 10 inch Android tablet. It runs Android 3.0, the tablet-optimized version of Android. The most interesting feature of the tablet is its optional keyboard dock that fits snugly with the tablet.

The Eee Pad Transformer is slightly wider than the Motorola Xoom or Apple iPad 2. That said, the machine is still a little lighter than the Motorola Xoom. Engadget reports that the all the hardware buttons on the tablet are well laid out. Performance is quite satisfactory thanks to the snappy dual core NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor. The overall user experience is also satisfactory. The camera is good. The keyboard looks and feels good but there are times when the tablet fails to recognize the dock. At times the tablet also seems to have difficulty recognizing SD cards and USB flash drives.

Long story short, the Eee Pad Transformer is the one of the best Android tablets available at the moment - better than the Motorola Xoom. It also has a low starting price. The software, however, is still far from perfect at the moment. Hopefully it is an issue that can be fixed by software updates.

LENOVO IDEAPAD SLATE COULD HAVE AN OAK TRAIL CHIP

A Lenovo Tablet with an Intel Oak Trail processor has showed up on Intel's website. The IdeaPad Slate is probably the same prototype tablet Lenovo showed off earlier this year. Back then the company hadn't finalized the design, but now more details are available.

According to Intel's website the Lenovo IdeaPad Slate will have an Intel Atom Z670 Oak Trail processor, a 30GB solid state disk and 2GB of RAM. It will reportedly have a touchscreen display that can be operated either with your finger tips or a stylus, much like the HTC Flyer. But while the Flyer runs Android operating system, the Lenovo tablet is more likely to run Widows 7. The prototype that Lenovo showed off at CES in January was running Windows 7.

The Intel Atom Z670 Oak Trail processor consumes very little power thereby offering long battery life. It also offers support for 1080p HD video playback.

ASUS WORKING ON AN INTEL OAK TRAIL TABLET

Asus is indeed working on an Intel Oak Trail tablet, but that is not the Eee Pad Slider. Last week Intel posted on its website that the Eee Pad Slider will be one of the products to ship with the upcoming Oak Trail Atom chip later this year. But now it has turned out that that information is wrong. Although Asus is building a tablet with an Oak Trail processor the company hasn't finalized the design and specifications of the device.

Because it has an Intel processor it will be able to run almost all operating systems but chances are it will run Windows 7 operating system instead of Google Android.

Meanwhile, Asus has confirmed that Eee Pad Slider will ship with a dual core NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor and Android 3.0 operating system. The tablet was introduced at CES in January. It has a 10.1 inch capacitive IPS touchscreen display and a slide-out keyboard that hides behind the display. By sliding the keyboard out you can use the tablet in the laptop mode. The Asus Eee Pad Slider is due out in June.

AMD C-60 FUSION APU WITH TURBO CORE COMING?

AMD's Fusion chips grabbed a lot of headlines this year. They combine high performance graphics and low power processors onto a single piece of silicon that delivers significantly better performance than regular netbook chips like Intel's Atom. Four Fusion APUs (Accelerated Processing Units) are currently available and now it looks like a fifth chip called AMD C-60 is on the way.

The AMD C-60 isn't all that different from the AMD C-50. Both are dual core processors with a clock speed of 1GHz and a total power draw of 9W. There are, however, a few differences as well.

While the AMD C-50 comes bundled with the Radeon HD 6250 graphics, the C-60 has Radeon HD 6290 graphics. The new chip will also support Turbo Core technology which allows users to overclock one processor core while the other is idle. The C-60 can reportedly run at speeds up to 1.33GHz. The Turbo Core feature will also overclock the graphics processor from 276 MHz to 400 MHz.

DELL TO ROLL OUT ALIENWARE M18X 3D-CAPABLE GAMING LAPTOP?

It looks like Dell is entering the 18.4 inch notebook space by launching the Alienware M18x gaming rig. Yesterday, Dell Canada website reported that Dell was indeed building a gaming monster with a high-performance Intel CPU, dual video cards and 3D capability.

That info has been removed from the said website, but that doesn't necessarily mean that Dell isn't building the laptop. According to the leaked info the notebook will have a large full HD 3D display, a Core i7 processor that can be overclocked to 4GHz and a range of graphics options including the single core NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460M and dual core AMD Radeon HD 6970M.

The laptop will reportedly have up to 32GB of DDR3 memory and up to 750GB of HDD capacity. M18x is expected to have the same chassis design as the Alienware M17x. It will reportedly start at around $2,090 US dollars.

ASUS EEE PAD SLIDER TO HAVE AN OAK TRAIL CHIP?

Intel launched its low power Oak Trail Atom processors earlier this week. These are meant for powering tablets, smartphones, netbooks and other mobile devices. Intel says that as many as 35 products will ship this year with the Oak Trail chip and one of these machines could be the Asus Eee Pad Slider.

The Eee Pad Slider is one of the four Android tablets Asus introduced at CES in January. It has a slide-out keyboard which simply hides itself behind the display when you are not using it. The tablet runs Google Android 3.0 operating system and a has a 10.1 inch IPS display with 1280 x 800 pixels. Until now, Asus has been saying that the Slider will have a 1GHz NVIDIA Tegra processor. But now it has featured on Intel's page with a note suggesting that it will have an Intel Atom Z670 processor. Neither Intel nor Asus has made any official confirmation regarding this.

The Eee Pad Slider is due out in May. Word is that Asus will launch a hardware update for the tablet later this year. So one possibility is that the first version will have a Tegra processor, while the second version will ship with the Oak Trail chip.

MOTOROLA XOOM WITH WIMAX COMING TO SPRINT?

The Motorola Xoom Android tablet is currently available in two versions. Verizon is selling a 3G model which will soon get a 4G LTE mobile broadband upgrade. There is also a WiFi only model. Now it looks like there will be a third model. It will have 4G WiMAX connectivity and is designed for Sprint's 4G network. Of course, we are talking about rumors here, but this one does look plausible.

The Motorola Xoom is a 10.1 inch Android tablet with an HD 1280 x 800 pixels display. The first Android tablet to ship with Google Android 3.0 operating system, the Xoom has a 1 GHz NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual core processor, 32GB of storage and front and rear-facing cameras.

While the tablet has better hardware than Apple's first and second generation iPads, it also carries a higher price tag. No word on the pricing and availability of that WiMAX model.

INTEL OAK TRAIL PROCESSORS TO SHIP NEXT MONTH

The Intel Oak Trail Atom processors will reportedly start shipping next month. The next generation Oak Trail processors are designed for tablets and ultraportable computers. The first of these processors to ship will be the Intel Atom Z670. While it isn't as power efficient as the ARM-based processors found in tablets, it does have one major advantage over ARM processors: The Atom Z670 is an x86 processor which means that it can run Windows.

Sure, Microsoft is building a version of Windows for ARM-based processors, but it is not yet available. Right now, if you want to run Windows on your computer, you need to buy a machine with an Intel or AMD processor.

Meanwhile Intel says that more than 35 products with Oak Trail chips will ship this year. These include computers from Fujitsu, Lenovo and Viliv.

The Intel Atom Z670 is based on the 45nm architecture. It supports fanless computer designs. Aside from allowing near silent computing, a fanless design will also make Oak Trail based tablets considerably thin.

The Intel Atom Z670 is a 1.5GHz 32 bit single core processor. It supports hyperthreading and has a maximum power draw of 3W. It can decode 1080p HD video and offers hardware support for Adobe Flash.

WIFI-ONLY SAMSUNG GALAXY TAB 7 INCH TABLET NOW SHIPPING FOR $350

A WiFi only version of the Samsung Galaxy Tab has gone on sale in the US for about $350. The Samsung Galaxy Tab has a 7 inch display with a resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels. It is powered by a 1GHz Samsung Hummingbird processor. A 3G-capable version of the tablet has been available since last year.

The WiFi only model has just 16GB of storage. Like the 3G model it also runs Google Android 2.2 operating system with Samsung's TouchWiz user interface running on top of that.

TigerDirect is now selling this model for $349.99 with same-day shipping. Amazon is also taking orders for the tablet for the same price.

Sure, the Galaxy Tab runs a slightly dated operating system. It also doesn't have a dual core processor like most of the top-of-the-line tablets shipping today. However, for that price it is not a bad deal at all. Now in case, you are looking for a 3G-enabled model and are willing to sign up for a service contract, you can get the tablet for even less from most wireless carriers.
